The holiday season is upon us people but remember the sea, sun and sangria, although brilliant, can also cause havoc with our teeth. Ewan Bramley Dental Care, a leading Newcastle dentist, gives you some top tips to protect your dental health on your jollies this year.

If you’re getting ready to jet off to sunnier climates soon, remember to look after your gnashers or you could face a whole host of issues further down the line.

It may sound obvious, but when it’s warm and hot we drink more- fruit juices, soft drinks, and alcohol are extremely acidic and this can make our tooth enamel soften.

Also, if you want to cool off in the pool on a sunny day the water will no doubt be full of chlorine that is also acidic. If there’s excess chlorine in there this may also soften tooth enamel and may make your teeth sensitive.

Our very own Dr. Ewan Bramley, explains: “The last thing on your mind when you go on holiday is the health of your teeth and gums.

“Although holidays should, of course, be all about getting some well deserved down time with your family and friends, they can also create problems for your teeth.

“But taking some simple steps on holiday can really help your oral health in the long run.”

If you’re likely to drink lots of fruit juice or will be drinking energy drinks to combat those holiday hangovers and will be jumping in and out of the pool, remember to follow these super simple steps!

Fizzy drinks, including the sugar-free ones, have lots of acid in them that can weaken teeth. And if you brush teeth that have been softened, you can wear them down.

So, remember this, folks…

– Don’t brush right after drinking fruit juice or a fizzy drink. Acid softens enamel!

– Make sure you give it four hours before you brush which will give tooth enamel time to recover.

– When you step out of the swimming pool, don’t brush straight away. If there’s lots of chlorine in there, this is bad news for your pearly whites. The stronger the smell, the more chlorine there is.

– If you exercise a lot on holiday, make sure you drink lots of water.

– Had a little too much to drink or eaten some dodgy Paella? If you vomit, don’t brush immediately. Rinse with water first.
