At Ewan Bramley Dental Care, we like to keep our fingers on the pulse when it comes to advancements in modern technology, and this week we’re taking a look at a new study which could revolutionise the field of dental implants.

According to a new study, nanostructured titanium implants, combined with new modern techniques, is set to dramatically reduce treatment time for patients.

In a recent trial, a dental surgeon has reportedly used model-guided surgery with the rapid placement of a titanium implant with a new tooth in record time.

OK, enough of the technical stuff. Why is this good news? We’re glad you’ve asked that question! This all means that a nanostructured titanium implant fuses with the jawbone faster and is far less likely to cause disease that can sometimes happen with current dental implant materials.

The study says that the new method is showing a lot of promise and will produce something that is quick, safe and looks amazing. It will improve the function of the mouth even further and will require little to maintenance, so the study claims.

The new dental implants method is extremely accurate

This new form of “model-guided” surgery is believed to be extremely accurate and will be cheaper to do than current techniques. Dentists could in theory also lessen the risk of things like gum recession as they can keep the original tooth root.

The successfully placed implant using the new technique caused less pain and will reportedly take much less time in the treatment room compared with current methods.

How are dental implants made at the moment?

In the modern world of dentistry, dentists are using computers to make things like dentures, teeth, and dental implants.

This is known as Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) or Computer-Aided Design (CAD).

A special computer can scan somebody’s mouth to make a bespoke image to give a clear impression of the treatment that is needed.

From this, a virtual tooth can be made before a computer-aided machine creates teeth out of a block of composite resin or a block of ceramic. We promise this isn’t the stuff of science fiction; it’s now science fact!

A CAM or CAD process is great because it doesn’t take anywhere near as look as traditional procedures and can get people smiling with confidence in no time.

What are dental implants, exactly?

Implants are a synthetic replacement for the root of a tooth. They are placed directly into a jawbone and can hold false teeth or crowns in place. In a nutshell, they act the same way as real roots do when they support natural or normal teeth.

And, if they’re looked after in the right way, they can last a lifetime.
