OK, so this on first inspection may seem a little far-fetched, but according to a new study – which Ewan Bramley Dental Care couldn’t resist shouting about – being in a stable relationship could actually dramatically improve our oral health.

And it’s bad news for the singletons amongst us, as the study also suggests that they visit the dentist less often and could be more prone to the dreaded tooth decay.

So, is the arrow of cupid good news for gums and teeth? Well, Ewan Bramley Dental Care certainly thinks so but don’t just take our word for it.

Grace Branjerdporn, a University of Queensland researcher, believes so too! She reportedly said that a soul mate could get us smiling in more ways than one.

In a study in which she took the lead, Ms Branjerdporn took a look at the link between oral hygiene trips to the dentist and being in a relationship and was astounded by the results.

Speaking to the Australian media she said that people who tend to avoid relationships or “emotional intimacy” as she describes it are more likely to have negative oral health results and outcomes.

Single people, in particular, had an increased chance of missing check-ups for reasons of prevention and are far more self-conscious about how they look to other people.

On the other side of the fence, however, the study points out that having a strong love life leads to more self-confidence when it comes to teeth as well as having a feeling of more self-worth and better dental habits, including regular check-ups.

The research carried out by the University of Queensland comes on the back of another study that looks at adult attachment theory and the bad health that can be created as a result of adult insecurity.

This rather thought provoking study is a world first and examines the relationships between the avoidance of positive dental habits and attachment anxiety.

It was carried out in a bid to support people who are most at risk of bad oral health and paving the way for better treatment, support and advice.
