Why is good dental care important for my baby and I?
You may not know this, but during pregnancy your dental health can suffer quite a bit. But if you take good care of your dental health in those first few months after your baby is born, you can make sure you both have healthy teeth and gums.
And, believe it or not, there is evidence that having healthy gums can also result in a safe and normal birth. Mums with healthy gums, for example, are less likely to have their baby early.
Is it necessary to visit the dentist during pregnancy?
Absolutely! You have lots of hormonal changes going on when you’re pregnant and you may well need more dental care because of them. If your gums are bleeding more than normal, for example, this would be a good time to see your dentist and this is a common issue for pregnant ladies.
I’m a bit worried about seeing my dentist. Is it safe to see the dentist when I’m pregnant?
Of course it is. By visiting a good dentist, there shouldn’t be any issues with routine procedures and treatments. If you’re ever unsure, you can always pick up the phone or visit your dentist to field any concerns you might have.
Will my teeth be damaged while I’m pregnant?
A popular old wives’ tale is that pregnancy will generate problems with teeth because of a lack of calcium. Another myth is that mums will lose a tooth for every child they have. Both of these are false, so don’t worry! Just take your dental health seriously and you’ll be fine.
Why smoking and alcohol is a big NO!
I’m sure you’ll already know this, but smoking and drinking when you’re pregnant is an extremely bad idea. Not only can it lead to you giving birth to an underweight baby it can also have a big impact on your new born’s dental health. For example, the baby is far more likely to have bad teeth as the enamel around them hasn’t been allowed to form properly. Just because you can’t see the teeth doesn’t mean they haven’t started to grow!
What should I be eating during my pregnancy?
It may sound like an obvious one, but having a balanced, vitamin and mineral rich diet will give your baby all it needs to flourish and stay healthy. Consuming dairy products like milk and cheese is a great source of calcium for your baby.
When’s a good time to take my baby to the dentist?
It’s probably an idea to call your dentist for advice on this one, but it might be a good idea to take your baby on your own check-up appointments so they can get used to the surroundings of the practice. At Ewan Bramley Dental Care, we’re happy to offer advice and answer any questions you might have about this.
