Here at Ewan Bramley Dental Care, we believe the role of dentistry in the modern world is to not only create beautiful smiles but to restore comfort, confidence and the health of our patients.

After all, a healthy smile leads to a healthy mind and body and because we’re living much longer, it is, of course, likely that most of us will have missing teeth and suffer from tooth loss.

Even though we have amazing procedures that combat tooth loss and restore natural looking smiles with treatments such as dental implants, many of us still face challenging social and physical situations when teeth are missing.

How we do we lose our teeth?

It’s a popular misconception, but adult teeth don’t die. If we lose them, more often that not, we are the reason, and it isn’t a result of getting older. Traumas to the face, or disease, are the most common reasons for missing teeth, and they don’t fall out because of natural causes.

Trauma

A serious knock or blow to the head can of course cause tooth loss, and if they don’t come out straight away but are beyond repair, they’ll no doubt drop out eventually.

Serious Illness

As well as gum disease, chronic ailments such as cancer and diabetes can cause adults to lose teeth, even at a relatively early age.

Gingivitis (Gum Disease)

Some call Gum Disease the “Silent Disease” because it doesn’t always start out as a big problem, but it can creep up on someone if it isn’t treated properly. If you ignore the signs, it can destroy the bone and lead to tooth loss.

Tooth Loss. The Unseen Effects.

The most obvious and disheartening effect of tooth loss is purely aesthetic. It can affect the way we think about ourselves, and the social consequences can be harmful and damaging to our confidence. But it isn’t just about appearance; it also affects our health and the function of our mouths. It has a negative effect on our speech, our confidence and can stop us from enjoying our favourite types of food.

And what some of us don’t realise is that it’s not all about the teeth, but the bone that supports them is just as important to our health. For the bone surrounding the teeth to remain healthy and to function it needs stimulation from our pearly whites.

When a tooth is taken away from our mouth, the bone’s volume will start to decrease, and this will affect the structure of our face and the way we look as well as reducing the functionality of our mouths.

How can dental implants replace teeth and restore smiles?

The good news is there are treatments available if tooth loss occurs, and one of the most popular and ground-breaking is dental implants.

If you’re missing one or more teeth, dental implants can provide a long-term solution and give you a natural looking replacement. Unfortunately, if you’ve lost a tooth, your jawbone heals itself by collapsing inwards. And if the roots that connect to your teeth aren’t there, the bone in your jaw will deteriorate. So, not only will you look older, but also your health will be affected, and your normal day-to-day life will be difficult.

Dental implants, however, can solve this issue. They are used to support one or more false teeth. A titanium screw will replace the root of the failed tooth and, just like a real root; it is placed into the jawbone. They look great, function as a normal tooth and will go a long way to improving your appearance and health.
