Did you know that mouth cancer or oral cancer affects 1 in 7 of us right here in the UK?

New research published by the British Dental Health Foundation has found that 1 in 7 of us know someone who has been either diagnosed with the disease, are currently battling it or even worse, died as a result of it.

With record numbers of mouth cancer patients coming to the foreground like never before, campaigners have warned more and more people in Britain will know someone who has been affected.

Were you aware that mouth cancer cases are approaching 7,000 and deaths are exceeding 2,000 for the first time? Scary stuff!

So, now is the time to do something about it and nip it in the bud well before you, your family or friends are touched by this killer.

What are the symptoms of oral cancer or mouth cancer?

Mouth cancer, also known as oral cancer, is usually where a tumour develops on the surface of the tongue, mouth, lips or gums.

Symptoms include:
– Red or white patches on the lining of your mouth or tongue.
– Ulcers.
– A lump.

How do we avoid or reduce the chances of mouth cancer?

According to the NHS, the three most effective ways to prevent mouth cancer from developing – or prevent it reoccurring after successful treatment – are:
– Not smoking.
– Keeping to the recommended weekly limits for alcohol consumption (21 units for men and 14 units for women (read more about alcohol units).
– Eating a ‘Mediterranean-style diet’, with plenty of fresh vegetables (particularly tomatoes), citrus fruits, olive oil and fish.
It’s also important that you have regular dental check-ups because dentists like Ewan Bramley Dental Care can often spot the early stages of mouth cancer.
