Ewan Bramley believes they could be!
Last week the government officially announced that E-cigarettes could safely pave the way for a smoke-free Britain and a healthier life.
This isn’t only great news for our general health and the war on cancer, but it could also be good news for our teeth and gums.
That’s according to the British Dental industry and private dentists like Ewan Bramley dental care.
So, what are the facts?
E-cigarettes could be prescribed by the NHS to help smokers quit, report says
Whilst expressing caution, E-cigarettes are reportedly 95% less harmful than tobacco and could be prescribed on the NHS in future to help smokers quit, a review of their use has said.
Experts who have compiled a report for Public Health England say “vaping” could be a “game changer” for persuading people to quit cigarettes.
They also say there is no evidence they give children a “gateway” into smoking.
Why is this good news for our teeth and gums?
In light of the review published by Public Health England – which believes E-cigarettes can be a “major influence” in helping people quit smoking – many quarters of the dental industry believe they can save lives and our teeth.
How? Well, smoking is the cause of many serious oral health problems including worsening gum disease, which is one of the most common causes of causes in UK adults. It is also responsible for the majority of mouth cancers and is the direct cause of thousands of deaths every year. On top of this, cigarette smoking leads to severe teeth discoloration and bad breath.
According to the statistics, every year almost seven thousand people in the UK are diagnosed with mouth cancer, and it leads to more deaths than testicular and cervical cancer combined.
And now E-cigarettes are viewed as the number one quitting aid used by smokers and getting smokers to use safer forms of nicotine such as these can be highly effective in helping people to quit once and for all.
Reacting to the new findings, our very own Dr. Ewan Bramley, a Newcastle private dentist, said:
“We need to spread the message that e-cigarettes, whilst not risk-free, are much less harmful than smoking, as currently nearly half the population are not aware of this.
“The review has highlighted that there is no evidence that e-cigarettes are a pathway for people to start smoking. This is an accusation, which has been levelled on the industry and one now which is likely to be incorrect.”
“There is a long way to go to before we get to a smoke-free lifestyle but any way that smoking numbers can be cut, and lives saved, has to be seen as a positive one.”
