Did you know that football stars are plagued by bad teeth? Yes, it’s true. Despite having silky skills on the field of play and a millionaire lifestyle, researchers have found that four out of ten have bad teeth and poor dental health.
But that’s not all folks. Apparently, having things like gum disease and dental cavities, can actually affect their performance and their overall welfare and health.
The study has highlighted that a footballer’s dental health may actually be worse than the general public! Why? Well, researchers can’t say for sure but a reliance on sports drinks and a lack of education inside their clubs could be at the core of the issue.
So then, which clubs were involved in the findings? Investigators covered almost 190 footballers from eight of the UK’s top flight clubs including Hull, Brighton, West Ham, Swansea, Sheffield Utd, Cardiff and Southampton.
What did the research find?
The research found that over 70% of footballers did the right thing by visiting their dental practice in the last year. The dentists involved in the research said that at least 40% had one decayed tooth or more and a massive 80% needed at least five fillings. Not good!
Overall, almost 85% had one filling or a tooth that had become decomposed.
Furthermore, 25% of them owed up to a history that involved damage to their teeth and face and drink sports juice like Lucozade three times in a week. Surprisingly 5% use smokeless tobacco and over half suffer from dental erosion, a process where harmful acid wears the tooth.
10% of footballers involved in the study say they suffer from toothache and almost 30% have sensitivity of the tooth.
So there we have it everyone, it’s not just you and I who suffer from dental problems, Premier League living legends do too!
So, what can we all do to make sure poor dental health is kept to a minimum?
One very effective method of keeping on top of our dental health is by visiting the dentist every 6 months!
Kids and people under the age of 18 should also see their local dentist at least once in a given year because their teeth and gums are also prone to decay just like everyone else.
