Ewan Bramley Reveals the hidden dangers of poor oral health…
Every day, our mouths will accumulate plaque layers that contain harmful bacteria. And if nothing is done about this bacteria, it can result in an alarming array of health problems.
We all know that bacteria in the mouth can lead to issues like the dreaded gum disease or cavities, but trust us, there are far more serious dangers lurking if we don’t take appropriate action.
Here, Ewan Bramley outlines just four serious health conditions that can be brought on by bad dental hygiene and health.
Cardiovascular Disease
As previously reported on our website, the links between strokes and heart attacks and poor oral health are very real. The bacteria that causes gum disease, Streptococcus, if allowed to enter the blood stream emits a protein that can cause clotting. This, of course, dramatically increases the chances of cardiovascular disease.
Diabetes
If you have diabetes, you really need to care for your teeth properly. Gum disease, in particular, if left untreated can cause your body to lose its ability to control and manage blood sugar properly which we all know isn’t good for a diabetes sufferer. If the body’s immune system isn’t firing on all cylinders people with diabetes increase their chances of deadly infections.
Alzheimer’s
When bacteria flows freely in the bloodstream, this can cause an environment of widespread inflammation. Inflammation is linked to a number of diseases and illnesses and Alzheimer’s is no exception. Studies have highlighted that there is a direct link between Alzheimer’s and gum disease and we think it’s vital that ageing people and the elderly make sure their dental health is a top priority. The older we are, the more at risk we are to illnesses like Alzheimer’s.
Kidney Disease
A report released in 2008 told us that those who suffered tooth loss as a result of gum disease were far more at risk of developing Chronic Kidney Disease. And guess what? This is also an inflammation-based disease. Inflammation is the direct result of the blood becoming infected but if you keep on top of your oral health and visit the dentist regularly you’ll be going a long way to making sure no bacteria ever enters your bloodstream.
Remember, our mouths are the gateway to our bodies. If we keep our oral health in check with regular trips to the dentist you’re well on your way to a happy and healthy life.
