Sensitive Teeth: What’s Causing It and How to Find Relief

Do you wince when sipping hot tea, biting into ice cream, or even breathing in cold air? You’re not alone – tooth sensitivity affects millions of people, and it’s often a sign that your teeth or gums need a little extra care.

What Causes Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity happens when the protective enamel or gums are worn down, exposing the inner layer of the tooth (dentine). This layer contains tiny tubules that connect directly to the tooth’s nerve – so anything hot, cold, sweet, or acidic can trigger pain. Common causes include:

  • Enamel wear from acidic food, drinks, or overbrushing

  • Gum recession, often linked to gum disease

  • Grinding or clenching, which can wear teeth flat

  • Tooth decay or broken fillings

  • Recent treatments like whitening or fillings (temporary sensitivity is normal)

What Can You Do at Home?

  • Switch to a sensitive toothpaste—use it twice daily for best results

  • Avoid brushing too hard—use a soft-bristled brush and gentle technique

  • Cut down on acidic food and fizzy drinks

  • Try to limit very hot or very cold foods and drinks if they trigger pain

How We Can Help

If sensitivity persists, it’s important to book an appointment. We can:

  • Apply fluoride varnishes or desensitising agents to strengthen enamel

  • Suggest treatments like bonding to cover exposed areas

  • Check for underlying issues such as decay, cracked teeth, or gum problems

Don’t put up with sensitivity, it’s often very treatable.!
