Cutting corners – One fifth of Brits don’t clean their teeth properly…
Do you let your teeth cleaning routines slip when life gets hectic? You’re not alone…
67% of Brits surveyed admit to cutting corners in everyday tasks such as cleaning the house, doing the dishes and personal grooming. One of the most commonly neglected tasks is a proper teeth clean. In fact, out of 2000 British people surveyed in 2025 by oral care brand TePe, one fifth of British adults admitted to only cleaning their teeth once a day – half the amount recommended by the NHS. When asked why, 36% said they skip brushing because they’re in a rush, 23% because they’re tired.
In a separate survey by electric toothbrush manufacturer Phillips Sonicare, 45% of people admitted that they never floss their teeth. These seemingly small acts of neglect when it comes to cleaning our teeth can have a long term impact on our oral health. Common oral health complaints in the UK include tooth sensitivity, bleeding gums and cavities.
10 most common ways that Brits cut corners with their oral hygiene:
- Skipped flossing
- Brushed only once a day
- Skipped brushing teeth before bed
- Skipped brushing after meals
- Brushed teeth for less than one minute
- Used mouthwash instead of brushing
- Brushed with an old toothbrush
- Skipped brushing in the morning
- Skipped brushing when running late
- Used a toothpick instead of floss
Quick guide to a good clean:
To clean your teeth properly, you should brush twice a day for 2 minutes, using fluoride toothpaste. The most important time of day to clean your teeth is right before bed. Place the brush at a 45 degree angle pointing towards the gum and brush gently in small, circular motions. Take care to brush all the outer surfaces of your teeth – front, back and top.
To get started with interdental cleaning, you can use TePe’s handy TOOTH guide:
Time: Spend at least one minute cleaning between your teeth.
One tooth at a time: Focus carefully and don’t rush.
Once a day: Make interdental cleaning part of your daily routine.
Tool: Always use the right tool, such as interdental brushes or floss. Never improvise with objects like pins or hair!
Habit: Build this small daily habit. Your future self (and your smile) will thank you.
