In last month’s edition of The Monthly Tooth, we explored the signs and symptoms of teeth grinding (bruxism) and jaw clenching – common habits that can lead to worn teeth, jaw pain, and even broken dental work. So what happens if you’re showing signs of this damage, or struggling with related symptoms?

One of the most effective, non-invasive ways we help protect your teeth and ease discomfort is with a Michigan splint.

What is a Michigan Splint?

A Michigan splint is a custom-made, hard acrylic appliance designed to fit over your upper or lower teeth—usually worn at night. It helps protect your teeth from grinding and reduces strain on the jaw joints and muscles by evenly redistributing bite pressure.

This allows the jaw to relax, relieves tension headaches, and prevents further wear or fracture, especially in teeth with large fillings or restorations.

Who Might Need One?

You may benefit from a Michigan splint if you:

  • Grind or clench your teeth at night

  • Wake up with jaw tension or facial pain

  • Have worn or flattened teeth

  • Experience clicking or limited movement in your jaw

  • Want to protect crowns, veneers, or other dental work

We custom-make each splint to fit your mouth precisely, using digital scans or impressions. Once fitted, we’ll review and adjust it to ensure it’s comfortable and effective.

Caring for Your Splint

It’s easy to keep your splint in great shape:

  • Wear it as recommended (usually overnight)

  • Rinse after use and clean gently with a soft brush and mild soap

  • Bring it to your dental reviews so we can check the fit
