Floss like a boss in 2026

The space in between: Why interdental cleaning is the new year’s resolution your gums will thank you for…

When you’re making a resolution to take better care of your teeth, interdental cleaning is the simple element you can add into your routine to make a big difference to your oral health. Brushing your teeth with a toothbrush twice a day is great for cleaning the visible surfaces of your teeth, but there are hidden spaces where the sides of your teeth touch, that your toothbrush just can’t reach. Food and plaque can accumulate in these spaces, leading to risk of bad breath, cavities, and gum inflammation.

So what is interdental cleaning?

Interdental cleaning involves cleaning these spaces in between your teeth, using specialised products such as dental floss, interdental brushes such as TePe brushes, dental picks and water flossers. The NHS recommends regular interdental cleaning from age 12 upwards. Some people are reluctant to floss because it can make their gums bleed, but in fact, over time, regular gentle flossing or interdental brushing will improve gum health and reduce the likelihood of bleeding.

Top tips:

Choose the right tool for your teeth: if you have small gaps or crowded teeth you may find a satin floss the most comfortable. For larger gaps, an interdental brush will be more efficient.

Go gently – never use force, if you choose the right sized brush or floss for your teeth you won’t need to force it between the teeth.

If you’re unsure, speak to your hygienist at your next appointment, they will be happy to advise you on the right products to use for your teeth.
