Ewan Bramley Urges Dentists To Get Behind No Smoking Day!
Did you know that only 44% of UK smokers are worried about the harm smoking has on their teeth and smile? And were you aware that only one in four of the nation’s smokers are concerned about the impact smoking can have on their gums?
And with No Smoking Day set to take place on 11th March, Ewan Bramley Dental Care, a leading cosmetic dentist, has encouraged the region’s dentists to use the event to shine some much needed light and guidance on the dangers of smoking and the impacts it can have on oral health.
“If the North East’s dental practices can generate genuine action to drive down tobacco use among its patients this will dramatically improve the success of treatment and help save lives in the long-run,” explains Dr. Ewan Bramley.
“Dentists play a massive role in creating awareness of events like No Smoking Day and if they can engage their patients on the topic, it can help people take those first steps needed to lead a smoke-free life.
“Many dentists will already be aware of the event, but if they don’t it’s easy to get involved. They can visit NoSmokingDay.org.uk and order an organiser pack and get the ball rolling.”
OK, so it’s no massive shock to learn that smoking isn’t great for our general health, but the British Dental Health Foundation have told us that many people aren’t taking the impacts on their oral health seriously.
Let’s take a look at some of the effects we know it can have on our teeth and gums…
What are the main problems smoking can cause when it comes to oral health?
Smoking can cause lots of different problems and in a worse case scenario we know it can be fatal.
What research has found, however, is the huge and harmful impact it has on our oral health. We’re talking here about your teeth, mouth and gums.
Smoking has been known to cause significant gum disease, tooth loss, staining and on a more serious note – cancer of the mouth.
It can cause many different health problems and, in some cases, fatal diseases. However, many smokers don’t realise the damage that the habit has to the mouth, gums and teeth.
What about my gums and teeth?
It may not sound like rocket science, but people who smoke are far more likely to get gum disease at some stage in their lives. Smoking can change the type of bacteria that forms in plaque and can make it far more harmful and potent.
What can a dentist do you for you?
Ewan Bramley Dental Care would carry out a regular and thorough examination of your mouth to see if your gums and teeth are healthy.
We’d take a look at your tongue, throat and cheeks as well so to see if there’s any cause for concern in those areas. We pride ourselves on being able to put you in touch with professional groups who can help you kick the habit for good.
We’d more than likely book an appointment for you to see one of our expert in-house dental hygienists as well so you can get a thorough cleaning and keep tabs on your oral health.
Take part in No Smoking Day 2015!
The theme for this year’s event is “Proud to be a Quitter” and will highlight thought-provoking stories of former smokers to show the massive benefits quitting has had on their lives.
