A leading Newcastle Private dentist has slammed a decision by the Joint Committee on Vaccination & Immunisation which will remove the right for young males in the UK to receive a vaccination against a mouth cancer causing disease.
Ewan Bramley Dental Care, based in North Shields, near Newcastle, thinks the decision to deny boys a jab against HPV or the Human Papilloma Virus, could result in the loss of thousands of lives Unfair & Unjust: Ewan Bramley reacts to Mouth Cancer Related Decisionin this country.
The current setup means that almost half a million boys continue to go without the vaccination every year, which could mean they’re at risk of getting HPV cancers which are related to the disease which is already known to be on the increase.
Ewan Bramley Dental Care Has Its Say
Dr Ewan Bramley, a Newcastle Private Dentist, has reacted to the ruling which will continue with the no vaccination policy by saying: “Its taken years for the JCVI to come to a decision and the one they’ve arrived at is unjust and completely unfair. It could cost the lives of thousands.
“HPV is known to be one of the main drivers of mouth cancer and as a leading dentist Newcastle we think this simply isn’t right. It’s easily prevented and it’s a sad moment for the world of oral health in the UK.
“We think such a decision is unfair and discriminatory and could leave millions of men and boys unprotected from an infection which is one of the biggest sexually transmitted problems we face.”
It’s not fair to only protect girls says Ewan Bramley
Through a school based HPV vaccination programme, girls have been protected from it since way back in 2008 and this helps protect them against cervical cancer.
Cancer Research UK, however, has shown that mouth cancer rates are on the rise in the UK, and many of these cases are believed to be as a result of HPV infections in the mouth as a result of oral sex.
Mouth Cancer Rates Are On The Rise…
Over 7,000 British citizens are told they have deadly mouth cancer and it currently takes the lives of up to 2,000 people each year.
Ewan Bramley, adds: “One of the main ways to keep boys away from the devastating effects of HPV is through a proper vaccination programme.
“To reject such a programme for boys isn’t right and could well take away the lives of thousands.
“The government has ignored the advice from leading health professionals and will have a lot to answer for once it becomes apparent of just how bad a decision this has been.”
